I still remember the first time I pressed a wooden block into dye and stamped it onto fabric. Something about that motion, dip, press, lift, repeat, settles you. There's no scrolling, no multitasking. Just your hands, the block, and the cloth in front of you.
Chennai has a long, quiet relationship with this craft. Block printing isn't new to this city. What's changed is how rarely we make time to actually sit with it.
That's really why Hastha exists. Not to put block printing in a museum, but to keep it in people's hands, on their clothes, in their homes, in their weekends.
If you've never tried it, our block printing workshops are the easiest way in. We run them every Friday and Saturday at our space in Chetpet for 2.5 hours, no experience needed. A printer guides you through the whole process. You walk in curious and walk out with a bag or a T-shirt you printed yourself. We keep groups small, around six people, because the room works better that way. It's a lovely thing to do with friends, with your family, or just on your own if you want a couple of hours all to yourself.
If you're already a maker or want to be one for a day, we also rent out our studio in Anna Nagar. Artists, design students, and anyone who wants to experiment, the space is yours for a half day or a full day. Blocks, dyes, and equipment are all set up and ready. If you'd like a helper to be with you, we can arrange that too. We just ask that you book about 10 days in advance, since we run on a fairly hands-on calendar ourselves.
And of course, there's what started it all: our clothing. Hand-block-printed T-shirts, veshtis, kurtas, tops, even umbrellas, each carrying the small, deliberate imperfections that only handwork leaves behind. No two prints land exactly the same way, and that's the part I love most.
If you're curious about craft, like the idea of doing something with your hands instead of just watching, or simply want beautifully printed clothing with real character, I think you'll feel at home here.
We'd love to have you, whether that's at a workshop, in our studio, or wearing something we made.
